Eurostar Travel Disruption Continues

By Admin, January 21, 2010

Eurostar train break downs, caused by the unusually severe winter weather, have resulted in tens of thousands of travelers stranded or delayed. Siz broken down Eurostar trains have resulted in as many as 55,000 travellers experiencing disruption.

It has been reported that although the snow shields used to protect train electrics for 15 years had been effective in the past, the unusually acute weather conditions in Northern France had caused severe problems. Eurostar say that they have identified the technical issue and that they are now taking steps to remedy the issue.

As many as 2000 passengers have been trapped on broken down trains in the Channel tunnel. Some spent up to 16 hours incarcerated in their train beneath the English Channel. Many of the trapped passengers reported receiving no information and no food or water during their incarceration. Some passengers even abandoned their trains and walked through the dark, cold tunnel which runs for 24 miles beneath the channel.

Many passengers have expressed dismay at the way in which Eurostar have managed the issues and failed to communicate with travellers. Some passengers are reported to have suffered from panic attacks and other from the effects of claustrophobia. Many passengers have complained about the lack of information from the train operator.

As many as 31,000 people were stranded on Saturday and a further 27,000 on Sunday.

Continuing bad weather has disrupted flights from many British airports. Weather forecasters have warned of further travel disruption as more snow is forecast this week and into the Christmas holidays. The Scottish Police have advised travelers to stay at home unless their journey is absolutely essential.
