Living in a house without air conditioning can be a nightmare in the summer; here are a few ways to make it more bearable.

You can use your freezer in many ways during the hot weather; not just to keep your food in. A great tip is to freeze a pillowcase and when you take it up to bed with you; you will be kept cool enough to go to sleep. Ice packs are also helpful on your feet, head and wrists.

Always make sure that you have plenty of ice packs on the go. This means that there always some in the freezer to replace the one you are using.

As your home doesn’t have air conditioning, you have to make the most of the next best thing, and that is fans. Clever positioning can get the maximum effect from your fans. Only have two windows open, at opposite ends of the room, or house if it is open plan. With one fan facing in and one out, the cool air is effectively drawn through the room, or house.

Get a shirt or top and wet it thoroughly. Wring it out and pop it on, by doing this and then sitting beside one of the fans will cool you right down. To avoid feeling sticky straight after a shower, let the shower air dry you instead.

Often the most effective way of cooling down during the day is to leave the house. There is always shade available outside, so sit yourself down and set your sprinkler so it comes over you.

Get to know all the other air conditioned places around your town and take advantage of it. Stores and libraries etc want to keep their visitors cool so get yourself along there.

Stay safe as well as staying cool. A freezer full of iced lollies and pops and a fridge full of water is essential. Oh, and why not pop round and see that friend with the air conditioned home?

So you’ve decided you want your child to go to summer camp? Before getting camp information you should have a goal in mind. Make a list of things you feel you want your kid to gain from a summer camp experience. Make sure it’s not just about activities. What about a camp’s physical attributes, like cabins or tents? Is it a small, personal camp or a large camp with loads of campers? -How old is the video? If there is no date, then estimate the age based on the campers’ clothing and the background music. No matter how recent the video appears to be, you should ask the camp director what has changed or been added to the video program since its filming,

-What does the video emphasize? Pay attention to what activities and facilities get the most time in the video.

-What level of sports are shown, in terms of skill and sophistication? If you’re looking for a specialty sports camp, does the level of play look too advanced or too basic?

-What is your and your child’s general impression after watching? Sometimes a gut instinct may tell you the most.

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest is a 1970s anti-authority type of movie. It has become a classic and a well-loved movie of many people. Most of the movie takes place in a mental hospital. It was filmed at Oregon State Hospital, in Salem Oregon. The film won the academy award in all five top categories.

Randle McMurphy is the central character. He is portrayed by Jack Nicholson. This man is a misfit that has spent a great deal of time in jails. When he is sent up for statutory rape, he comes up with a plan. He does not want to do time on a prison farm. This would mean a great deal of hard labor. He decides that a mental hospital would be much easier for him. He tries very hard to convince the doctors that he is crazy. They are unsure of his mental status. Eventually they consent to commit him.

He arrives at the mental hospital. He looks around and sees an environment that he can control. The men seem meek and institutionalized. However, he runs into opposition. That opposing force is Nurse Ratched, played by Louise Fletcher. She rules with an iron hand. She uses intimidation and guilt to get the men do as she wishes. She seems more interested in controlling people than healing them.

McMurphy amuses himself by playing the men at poker. He takes their spending money and cigarettes. He and Nurse Ratched are in a constant power struggle. There is one instance, where he wants to watch the World Series. There is only one television in the ward. He solicits the men to vote for the baseball game. He thinks he has a unanimous vote. Nurse Ratched reminds him there are many other men on the ward. It would not be fair to them. Most of them men are not aware of reality, let alone a baseball game. However, McMurphy finally gets a majority of votes. Nevertheless, she reminds him that the voting closed right before his final count. In defiance, he sits in the ward and reenacts a baseball game. It is a big hit among the inmates. Nurse Ratched smiles, knowing that she had won.

McMurphy bets an inmate that he can lift a large hydrotherapy machine. He struggles but cannot lift it. He is proud that he tried. This teaches the men the importance of effort. They look up to him as a leader.

He also takes the men on an unauthorized deep-sea fishing trip. They have an adventure on the ocean. Later, he and some of the inmates get into a fight with orderlies. They receive shock therapy for their troubles.

At one point, McMurphy finds out most of the inmates are there by their own choosing. This does not apply to him. Nurse Ratched can make him stay there indefinitely. He decides to behave better. Nevertheless, he cannot resist antagonizing her. They struggle for power all through the movie. You may be surprised at the ending.

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest is well worth watching. It has good acting and is well written. Newcomers Danny Devito and Christopher Lloyd go on to successful careers.
