How To Make Sure Your Beauty Creams Are Safe

By Mickey Fraser, May 1, 2010

Anti-aging products are a huge market. We all hope to find the perfect serum or cream or lotion to turn back time and retain youth or recapture faded beauty.

We consider our desire for youth in many of our life choices. We wear sunblock or avoid direct sunlight during the heat of the day. We eat well, and take our vitamins and supplements. We also tend to purchase cosmetic and skin care products that contain the latest breakthrough ingredient which claims to reduce visible signs of aging.

We are probably barking up the wrong tree in our quest. We should be starting with lifestyle changes such as avoiding cigarettes, caffeine, and alcohol, as these dry out or damage our skin. We also need to have adequate water intake, and a good daily skincare routine.

You can’t have young-looking skin without a good daily routine, it is true. However, we don’t need to purchase each new product that promises to fix our skin woes. Instead of purchasing numerous products in our search for a miracle, it would be far wiser to actually read the labels of products before deciding which to purchase. If we did some research we would find that many of the helpful products offered today contain ingredients harmful to the skin.

Start with skin creams. We tend toward brand loyalty, and buy what is familiar or prestige. Instead, try researching products you are considering before you buy. Check to see if the main ingredients have been found to have negative effects.

You will have to do some digging around to locate products that are protective and hydrating and genuinely healthy for skin. A good starting place is to read online product reviews; many of these will mention any negative effects from product use. Many people will only write reviews to complain about what they do not like, so you will be able to get a good idea of the downside of a product.

Stay away from products that are full of chemicals and synthetics. Check the label to see what the first ingredients are. Purchase products where the first ingredients are all natural.
